Whirling of ShaftsApparatus consists of a light alloy bed 1.13m in length fitted with acountershaft assembly at one end with a high speed low voltage DC motorconnected to the experimental shaft by a flexible coupling_ Four ball bearingbrackets which are adjustable in posi-tion, support the shaft and provide nodalpoints. Three guard rings to limit the shaft deflection are supplied and thesemay be located at any point along the bed. Two additional shaft specimens areprovided, all of ground steel, of various diameters. Also provided are twodiscs, having different values of Moment of Inertia to fit each of the specimenshafts. A separate solid state AC Control Unit provides infiÂ¬nitely variablerotational speed control and speed is displayed by a precision electronictachometer.
